Introduction.  A tummy tuck otherwise known as an abdominoplasty is a cosmetic procedure designed to firm and smooth the abdomen. This cosmetic procedure removes excess skin and fat from the abdomen and may also tighten the muscles of the abdominal wall. Thus resulting in a flatter, tighter abdomen.

An individual contemplating this type of surgery must first have a personal consultation with a plastic surgeon certified by the American Board of Plastic Surgery, such as Dr. Shienbaum. During this initial consultation, specific questions relating to your individual needs will be answered. Your abdomen will also be examined to determine the quality of your abdominal skin, the amount and location of any excess fat, the location of any existing scars, and the status of the underlying muscles.

Candidates. A good candidate for abdominoplasty is an individual who is in relatively good shape, but has loose abdominal skin and/or a significant amount of abdominal fat that wont respond to exercise or dieting. Often, some patients may benefit from liposuction or a more limited type of abdominoplasty or mini-tummy tuck.

Surgical Procedure.  An abdominoplasty is performed in a hospital and an overnight stay is generally required. A general anesthetic is used so that you will sleep throughout the procedure. Medications are prescribed to keep you comfortable during the recovery period in the hospital and at home.

When the date for your  surgical procedure is set, you will be given specific instructions on how to prepare for surgery, such as avoiding certain vitamins and medications, drinking, eating, smoking, and arranging for help at home following the surgery. Specific instructions on after surgery care will also be discussed at this time.

An abdominoplasty incision is placed horizontally just within or above the pubic area. The length of the incision varies depending on the amount of skin to be removed. Excess skin above the navel is separated from the deeper tissues so it can be pulled downward and removed and a second incision is made around the navel in patients with larger amounts of loose skin. The tone of the underlying muscles is examined. If there is a significant lack of tone of the abdominal muscles, the muscles will be tightened.

When surgery is complete, small drainage tubes will be in place beneath the skin to prevent fluids from accumulating. These will be removed within the first week. A compression garment should be worn for approximately 3 weeks to help reduce swelling.

The majority of the swelling and bruising will resolve within a few weeks, however, the healing process does take time. You should be able to return to normal levels of activity in about 6 weeks. An abdominoplasty is an extensive procedure which generally requires 6 months and possibly up to 1 year for total healing to occur.

Each year, thousands of people undergo abdominoplasty and experience no major complications. How quickly your swelling and discoloration resolves depends on your health and healing quality, as well as a quiet, careful, and calm convalescence.
